Whether your DeLorean is your daily driver or the automotive eye candy that only comes out to play every once-in-awhile, the Summer season has likely increased the amount of time you’ve taken your vehicle outside of your garage for long trips, short joy rides, and/or car shows. While it always feels great to get more frequent use out of your stainless sports car, there’s always one annoying drawback: the more you use your car, the
harder it is to ignore its current problems!
One problem that is particularly difficult to ignore when getting more frequent use out of your DeLorean is the infamous “hot start issue”. A hot start issue is when a vehicle’s engine fails to start, or is difficult to start, when warm or hot. Unlike modern vehicles which utilize a variety of sensors and computer data to inject the appropriate amount of fuel needed to properly start an engine hot or cold, the 40+ year-old
technology found in a DeLorean’s fuel system is a lot more basic and temperamental, making the issue a little more common amongst these cars than some owners might think.
So if it’s not unusual to see cases of DeLoreans with hot start issues, it should be easy to diagnose and fix, right? Unfortunately, resolving the problem may be a little more difficult than you might expect. Also unlike the cars of today, you can’t just plug in a vehicle scanner to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem. Tackling this issue can be a real pain and without a proper understanding of the vehicle's internals, can
be detrimental to your car’s health.
